Gee, who really designed this map, the Chamber of Commerce ? Looking at this map. Lakeland appears to have very little crime. How about the shootings, stabbings, drug busts, etc. ?

Good point. The data is from the Lakeland Police Department Crime Analysis Unit. On the front page you see the disclaimer as to where I get this data.

I know they track Assault/Battery as a category. For example, there were 8 the week of August 12 and none the week of August 5th.

I won't speak for the LPD, but I don't think this was ever intended to be all reported crime in Lakeland. It is the crimes in those categories where patterns can be discerned.

Assault/Battery/Murder are usually crimes of passion, are they not?

Site Info

Lakeland Crime is a sub-site of the hyperlocal blog, Lakeland Local. Both sites cover Lakeland, Florida. Polk County's most populous city.

Map Info

Each week you can find a full page map by clicking the LakelandLocal.com Crime Map link in the small map's green bar.

You'll notice the top right corner of the map has a pull-down entitled "Legend." Pull that down to find check boxes for each category listed on the map. Now you can see only those categories that interest you. They're all easy to toggle on and off.

In addition to the house icon for Residential Burglaries, we have auto icons for Stolen Vehicles and Recovered Stolen Vehicles. Plus, for the occasional Residential Robbery we'll show a bed. Note: Vehicle Burglaries are "salmon" icons. That category covers almost half the items on the map. Anything too bold overwhelms the map.

Notes: You can click on a map pin to see the address and type of report. Click and hold to grab the map and move it around. When you click on a pin the address and call time is listed in the pop-up windows.

I use OpenOffice, CommunityWalk and MapQuest to make the map.
